The three ORAI proteins (ORAI1, ORAI2, ORAI3)
The three ORAI proteins (ORAI1, ORAI2, ORAI3) that form the calcium-permeable CRAC channels were named after the three horae (hours): Eunomia (goddess of good order and lawful conduct) and her sisters Dike (goddess of Justice) and Eirene (goddess of Peace). In Greek mythology, they were the guardians of the gates of Mount Olympus, not unlike the CRAC channel, which controls the flux of Ca2+ ions across the plasma membrane. Musée du Louvre.

Otto Loewi
Otto Loewi (1873-1961). He won the Nobel-prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1936 for his discovery of acetylcholine as the second messenger secreted by the vagus nerve and regulating heart rate and function. After having to leave Nazi-occupied Austria, he was invited to join the Department of Pharmacology at New York University College of Medicine (now NYU School of Medicine) in 1940. "Ja, Kalzium, das ist alles" (yes, calcium is everything) is a quote attributed to Otto Loewi and may have been a comment on the important role of Ca2+ in muscular contraction, but it is now evident that Ca2+ is indeed involved in the regulation of virtually "everything" including the fertilization of oocytes, neuronal transmission, the regulation of cell death, the secretion of hormones, and immune responses.
